Dino Safari

There’s no shortage of what to see, hear, and do at any time in Nevada. And that includes the two weeks of early voting, which begins Saturday, May 23.

So this week, we’ve decided to do something different. For those of you hitting the ballot box, we’ve picked some cultural options at or right near polling places in the Las Vegas valley.

Meadows Mall: Dino Safari at Springs Preserve

The immersive dinosaur experience features larger-than-life replicas of the most fascinating, fan-favorite prehistoric inhabitants that roamed Earth. In this walk-through adventure, visitors will meet and interact with life-sized dinosaurs, including the T.rex of North America and the Spinosaurus from Africa. With the help of scientifically accurate labels, installations, and realistic moving animatronics, Dino Safari will transport visitors back millions of years to get up close and personal with prehistoric creatures in a replica of their natural habitats.

This experience showcases how dinosaurs evolved over time, and offers hands-on challenges for visitors to solve, along with depictions of natural elements that often occurred during this time, such as earthquakes. The thrilling adventure features captivating virtual reality technology, spectacular installations, and interactive activities for children.

Admission to Dino Safari is included with general admission and free for Springs Preserve members. The limited-engagement attraction will run through Monday, Sept. 7.

Sahara West Library: Three art exhibitions

Brian McPartlon is an abstract painter from New York whose career spans over six decades of relentless experimentation. Known for his "large, bold canvases" that often reach proportions of eight by six feet, McPartlon’s work is defined by an immense physical presence and a technique designed to envelop the viewer in a visceral experience of color and light.

On exhibit at Sahara West Library from May 15 through August 1.
Gallery reception on Thursday, May 21, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
This exhibit features the paintings and calligraphy of James Kim and members of the Korean Calligraphy Art Association. The works are composed of watercolor and ink, and “created in the spirit of the ancestors.” With traditional ink-wash paintings, a great range of tonalities can be found in a single brush stroke. Once a stroke is painted, it cannot be changed or erased. This makes ink-wash painting a technically demanding art form requiring a great deal of skill and concentration.

On exhibit at Sahara West Library from May 19 through August 9.
Gallery reception on May 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In As American as the State Fair, Clay Arts Vegas honors the nation’s 250th birthday by turning to one of America’s most enduring cultural touchstones: the state fair. Through ceramic forms both functional and expressive, the artists of Clay Arts Vegas explore the textures, colors, and emotions that define this quintessential American experience. This lively collection draws inspiration from funnel cakes and Ferris wheels to blue‑ribbon pies, carnival barkers, and warm summer nights, celebrating the traditions that continue to bring communities together as we mark 250 years of shared history.

Clay Arts Vegas is a working/teaching pottery studio.

On exhibit at Sahara West Library from May 21 through August 1.
Gallery reception on May 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Summerlin Library: Now I Get It: A Play with Music

Over 50 years after the war, three Marine Corps Vietnam vets, along with their wives, reunite. Talk of Marine Corps days leads to talking about the war — something they never talked about, especially around their wives. This leads to one wife talking about the war at home, something she never talks about ... especially around her husband.

Written, directed, lyrics, and book: Loren Marsters
Music composer: A. Patrick Rose
Musical director: Ryan Gourley

Free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and may be limited.

UNLV Lied Library: I Pagliacci at Judy Bayley Theatre

Ruggero Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci is a landmark of the verismo movement, a one-act opera that blurs the boundary between theatrical performance and raw human emotion. Set in a rural Italian village, it tells the story of a traveling commedia dell’arte troupe whose offstage tensions spiral tragically into real life.
