On its face, this is a short documentary presented by Clark County about a mural commissioned by Clark County, so there’s a promotional feel to this. However, the documentary — which, like the mural project, is called Unsung — is essentially a history lesson. The mural in question is spread out over 21 pillars at the Pearson Community Center. Each of those 21 pillars tells the timeline highlights of the Historic Westside. The title Unsung comes from the under-celebrated legacy-building of the people and institutions which would build and lift the Westside, most of them people from the Black community who lived there. Locals Gwendolyn K. Walker and Zachary Fried made the film, which centers the work of artist Mike Norice, who created the artwork, and Claytee White, the UNLV historian who guided the selection of representations on the pillars.

This entire event — from the food cooked for the attendees, to the drinks poured, to the music performed, to the art made and so on -- is entirely women-produced. This is the fourth edition of this event, which began in 2019. And it benefits the Women’s Hosptality Initiative, which promotes and centers women in one of our biggest industries. There will also be art, discussion, and retail components — again, all brought to you by women — and entertainment will be provided by singer Savannah Smith and DJ 88.

Dawg House Rescuers is a group of volunteers in Pahrump who work to save lost and abandoned pets. You can spend a couple of hours bowling with your family or as part of a team. Funds raised go toward veterinary care. They can always use more volunteers, and donations.
You can get tickets at the event or online.
Ever thought about fostering a pet but were a little uncertain? With local shelters and rescues overflowing with lost and abandoned pets (especially larger dogs), you are needed more than ever.
At this monthly event you can learn what kinds of animals need fostering, what to expect (besides many sloppy kisses and endless cuddle time), and how the rescue you work with will support you. Usually there are representatives from several rescues and area shelters on hand.
Held on the first Sunday of every month.

One Book, One Henderson is an annual event aiming to get everyone talking about the same book. Books are available at libraries and online. This year’s selection, The Fox Wife, is by Yangsze Choo. It begins in 1908 Manchuria and explores a world of mortals and spirits, humans and beasts, and their dazzling intersections. Epic in scope and full of singular, unforgettable characters, The Fox Wife is a stunning novel about old loves and second chances, the depths of maternal love, and ancient folktales that might very well be true.
On October 1 the author will be at the Henderson Multigenerational Center (250 S. Green Valley Parkway) for a book signing. You can get a copy there.
It's free, but go to "Get Tickets" and you can find out more, hear music related to the book's setting, see art inspired by The Fox Wife, participate in a book club discussion, and find links to the ebook and audiobook.
