It’s been argued that Clark County’s board of commissioners is more important than the state legislature, even the governor’s office.

They oversee the state’s economic engine, the Las Vegas Strip.

They oversee one of the largest and busiest airports in the country, Reid International; they also oversee the state’s only nonprofit, public hospital, University Medical Center.

They also make rules and laws for unincorporated Clark County, home to about the same number of people who live in Henderson and Las Vegas combined.

One of the seats up for election this fall is District C. That seat is currently held by Ross Miller, who isn’t running again. The district covers the west-northwest section of the county, including Mt. Charleston.

Shannon Bilbray-Axelrod, a Democrat, is a former member of the state assembly. She won her District C primary election in June and will face Republican April Becker in November.

KNPR reached out to Becker for a candidate interview but did not receive a response.
