With our dining expert Lorraine Blanco Moss taking some time off, we’re devoting our June food segment to seasonal beverages instead.
Here are Desert Companion contributor Lissa Townsend Rodgers' favorite and suggested summer drinks:
- Tiki cocktails
- Rum and gin cocktails in general, but don't discount those with vodka. "It's kind of like the little black dress of liquors. It goes with everything. It's appropriate for every occasion."
- Citrus-based cocktails, like the Gin Rickey, the Lemon Drop, the Limoncello, and the Greyhound ("Vodka. Grapefruit. It's a classic. It's got vitamins in it.")
- For beer: shandies and lighter IPAs. "I'm a big fan of Stiegl Radler Grapefruit beer. That's a good one for the summer."
- Sangria: I like to make [it] in the summer. That's what you can do with all that sketch wine that you got over the holidays. Put a bunch of fruit in, a little shot or something, and then you've got yourself a nice big vat of sangria. And everybody always likes that."
- Hits Different: A tweak of the Brazilian batida cocktail from the Red Dwarf. Read more about it here.
