A new affiliation between a childhood cancer charity and Roseman University’s medical school aims to improve care and address Nevada’s shortage of pediatric oncology caregivers.
The Cure 4 the Kids Foundation, a Las Vegas charity that assists children suffering from cancer, moved into space at the university’s Summerlin campus over Labor Day weekend.
The alliance provides the foundation’s doctors with modern lab and treatment facilities and offers hands-on experience for Roseman’s medical, nursing, pharmacy and MBA students.
“To have that there for an in-house training facility for our students is huge,” said Roseman University President Renee Coffman. “This is just a match made in heaven.”
The partnership is also envisioned as a way to address Nevada’s shortage of doctors and other medical professional who are experts in childhood cancers.
“A state our size should have roughly 10 to 12 board-certified pediatric oncologists, we currently have seven statewide,” said Annette Logan-Parker, the CEO, president and co-founder of the Cure 4 the Kids Foundation.
She said offering state-of-the-art technology and instruction to medical students makes it more likely they will remain in Nevada when their schooling ends.
“I believe that the better job that we do with training qualified healthcare professionals locally, the better we’ll do at retaining them to stay here,” Logan-Parker said.
