Commission Candidate Wants Spotlight On Issues, Not Controversial Tweet

Twitter

The primary vote is June 12.

Two Democrats are running in a hotly contested race for Clark County Commission’s District E, which covers much of downtown Las Vegas.

State Senator Tick Segerblom is running against Marco Hernandez, who is vice president of the Laborers Local 872 union.

The union was a strong supporter of the publicly funded Raiders stadium. Segerblom was not a supporter.

Hernandez told KNPR's State of Nevada that he supported the stadium and the construction of the Las Vegas Convention Center expansion because they brought badly needed construction jobs to the valley.

It is not just about the Raiders' stadium for Hernandez. He also wants to work with the business community to make improvements to some of the most blighted areas of the district.

"Part of it is we have to work with safety in those areas," he said, "I get it. I lived there for so many years... Clean neighborhoods, safe neighborhoods and it will bring back those neighborhoods."

Hernandez says crime and homelessness are the two biggest problems in the district. He says both of the issues need to be addressed.

However, it is not the issues in the race that are receiving attention. A tweet by another union official has taken the spotlight.

Union chief Tommy White tweeted a picture of Segerblom with a headline accusing a lawmaker of abusing women. The tweet included a link to an article. However, the headline and the article were about a lawmaker from a different state and had nothing to do with Segerblom.

Segerblom told KNPR's State of Nevada that the tweet was an insult to his character and it was unconscionable that Hernandez hadn't disavowed it.

Hernandez didn't disavow the tweet when he spoke to KNPR's State of Nevada. Instead, he said he wanted to stay focused on the issues of the campaign.

"I'm here to talk about my campaign," Hernandez said, "I'm not here to talk about somebody else that I'm not in charge of how they tweet or how they respond on social media."

Hernandez said he is own individual and he is running to help the community not to help the union's agenda.
