Commission Candidate Urges Opponent To Disavow False Tweet

State Sen. Tick Segerblom is running for a Clark County Commission seat that includes much of downtown Las Vegas. Chris Giunchigliani has held the seat for the maximum 12 years and is now running for governor.

Segerblom is running to become the Democratic candidate against Marco Hernandez, an official with the union Laborers Local 872.

However, a tweet from another official with the union has sparked a lot of controversy. The tweet from Tommy White included a picture of Segerblom and it included a headline accusing a lawmaker of abusing women.

But the article and the headline were for a lawmaker from another state and had nothing to do with Segerblom.

“It definitely is over the top," Segerblom told KNPR's State of Nevada, "The fact that you would link my picture with an article that has nothing to do with me and then the headline – abusing women – obviously is a very serious matter with respect to the #Metoo movement.”

Hernandez did not return calls for comment.

Segerblom said he didn't want the election to be about Tommy White, but “for the candidate, Marco, not to disavow it, I think, it is unconscionable because it clearly is an absolute fabrication.”

He said it is an insult to his character that is not acceptable.

Instead, Segerblom wants to focus his campaign on the issues he sees as important to the district he hopes to represent, including restarting the county's redevelopment office in hopes of invigorating blighted areas of Clark County.

He says now that the tough times of the Great Recession are over it is time to look to the future.

“I think we just need to decide collectively as a valley what we want to be,” he said.

Segerblom said that the community needs to decide whether growth is the end goal or if growth is a means to the end.

He believes growth is a means to an end and should be managed so the county can be something better for everyone.
