Name Of Confederate Leader Could Be Removed From Nevada Mountain

A Nevada mountain range named after a Confederate leader could be replaced with a Shoshone phrase.

The Nevada State Board on Geographic names will consider replacing then name Jeff Davis from one of the state’s highest peaks and replacing it with a Shoshone phrase meaning “white peak.”

Tribal leaders in the state are urging the change, saying the Shoshone people and their ancestors predated white settlers by thousands of years.

Interest in reviewing the name spiked in recent years as communities around the country sought to remove monuments to Davis and other Confederates from places of the honor.

If the state board approves the change, it will still need approval from the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
