The City of Reno is joining a state effort that seeks to clarify how much compensation victims of the Little Valley Fire are entitled to under the law.
The Little Valley Fire flared up in October 2016 as a result of a prescribed burn that went out of control and destroyed 23 homes. A Reno Gazette-Journal investigationlater found that poor monitoring and delayed response were key factors in the fire, which victims are now holding the state responsible for.
The State of Nevada is seeking clarification from the Nevada Supreme Court on whether they should be liable to pay for damages beyond the $100,000 cap under tort law.
The City of Reno signed a “friends of the court” brief, which is filed by parties not involved in the case but have a strong interest in its outcome.
