Another hurdle has appeared for the controversial Education Savings Account program.
Governor Brian Sandoval included $60 million for the ESA program in his budget, but today the Assembly Ways and Means and the Senate Finance committees closed the budgets for the state Treasurer’s office, essentially removing all funding for the program that would allow parents to send their children to private school with their per pupil funding.
It amounts to about $5,200 per student. The vote by the panels doesn’t mean the end for the ESA’s, but it removes if from the Treasurer’s budget.
Senate Bill 506 in the Senate Finance Committee would establish the ESA program through a new Office of Educational Choice, the bill has not yet had a hearing.
