LAS VEGAS (AP) — NV Energy wants to return existing rooftop solar customers to older, more favorable rates for the next 20 years.
The company said it filed a request with the Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday to "grandfather" customers who installed a system before Dec. 31, 2015.
The move comes as solar companies forge ahead with efforts to overturn a 2015 law that authorized a rate hike for their customers. The Nevada Supreme Court will hear arguments on Friday about whether that measure should appear on the November ballot.
Chandler Sherman of the group that's backing the ballot measure said grandfathering the approximately 32,000 existing rooftop solar customers would bring much-needed relief. But she said it would take something like the sweeping referendum to make solar systems economical for new customers in Nevada.
