LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada utility regulators have rejected a bid by a big Las Vegas data storage company that uses lots of electricity to unplug from the main power supplier in the state, NV Energy.
The Nevada Public Utilities Commission voted 2-1 on Wednesday to deny permission for Switch to go it alone to produce and buy its own power.
State consumer advocate Eric Witkoski says the key concern was that remaining NV Energy customers would be stuck with higher costs.
The decision could make it harder for several big Las Vegas Strip casino companies that have also applied to withdraw from the public energy grid.
Switch is one of NV Energy's biggest private customers.
It had said it wanted to cut costs and use 100 percent renewable energy in coming years.
