CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A legislative committee has approved a bill that aims to resolve a fight between rapidly growing rooftop solar installation companies and NV Energy.
Lawmakers on the Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee voted unanimously on Monday to approve SB374.
Rooftop solar companies have been protesting the state's 3 percent cap on net metering, which allows people with solar installations at their homes to send excess energy back to the utility company for a bill credit.
NV Energy said net metering favors solar customers over traditional ones. Solar companies say the cap would eliminate thousands of jobs.
The compromise bill requires the Nevada Public Utilities Commission to set a tariff by the end of this year that solar customers would pay to even out the cost-shifting once a cap is reached.
