May is dazzling with its dance shows, film, and narrative-rich art

May 24

This joint effort aims to highlight both organizations' up-and-coming talent. This is a good opportunity to not only support younger artists, but also introduce the uninitiated to dance. It’s a free show, so if you’ve ever been curious about what ballet performance is like — or if your children, your date, or your parents have — this is probably the easiest way to find out, and it’s also in an intimate space.

Through May 11

it won’t be necessary to read it or see any of those movies ahead of Nevada Conservatory Theatre’s stage version of the mystery classic. It’s a fairly straightforward story, and I believe the Ken Ludwig version that NCT is staging has a little fun with it. Ludwig's adaptation mixes both mystery AND comedy. The play takes place in the mid-1930s. As the train travels from Instanbul to London, and the murder investigation begins, the facism slowly taking over Europe becomes apparent.

Note: Available through May 11.

Through May 12

This is a group show, featuring a handful of local artists who have a connection to Hawaii. It demonstrates how those artists stay connected to their native culture, while also being influenced by other cultures. They do this through the creation of paintings, drawings, carvings and, of course, lei. Hawaii has a rich artistic tradition and an instantly recognizable aesthetic. So, I would imagine this show will be accessible to everybody, not just art consumers.

This painting exhibition is showing a five-decade collection of work by Yoko Kondo Konopik. The local abstract artist is dedicated to swaying the eyes and emotions of those who view her work with its fun shapes and vibrant color. Her work will also be featured in "Color Made," another show happening at the Barrick.

Note: Available through May 17. Gallery is open every Tues-Sat.

This is a curated show by a graphic design professor in Boston named Elizabeth Resnick. It’s chock full of posters that offer a wide spectrum of design styles — and, as you can tell, sociopolitical topics.

Note: Available through May 17. Gallery is open every Tues-Sat.

The Barrick is busy this May. You'll have until slight end of the month to view multiple shows — one of them in the Window Gallery. There sits a large painting of another local artist, Gabriella Rodriguez. Her “Al Amanecer” is a combination of paint and fabric. It addresses many things personal to the artist — and maybe familiar to Las Vegas residents.

Note: Available for viewing through May 17. Gallery is open Tues-Sat.

This group show will be featuring older mixed-media works from the Barrick collection. It also showcases guest artists like Yoko Kondo Konopik, Naes Pierott and Beck+Col. And the latter offers up their playful horror film Red Night.

Note: Available through May 17. Gallery is open every Tues-Sat.

May 31 - June 1

Have you ever seen barbershop vocalists perform — as part of a bigger production that wasn’t ever on Broadway? If not, he's your chance to indulge. The Silver Statesmen Barbershop Chorus and Quartets are producing something called Dastardly Deeds in the Desert. This is not just a concert of barbershop-quartet music. It will be an old-school western melodrama with a story, the usual good guys and bad guys, maybe some in between.

This is a 90-minute ode to short-attention-span cine-o-philia. If you’ve ever wondered what film majors whip up while in school, that’s what this showcase is all about – all original student work. We think of film as a very mainstream artform, but so much that we don’t see or even have access to are nothing like what we stream into our homes!
