UNLV Department of Art's Fall Artist Lecture Series is featuring an artist talk with Josephine Halvorson. She makes art from direct observation, foregrounding the firsthand experience of noticing, describing, and learning from the physical world. She works primarily in painting, but also in sculpture and printmaking.
Halvorson received her MFA from Columbia University in 2007, her BFA from The Cooper Union in 2003, and attended Yale Norfolk in 2002. She is the recipient of several international residencies and fellowships, including a US Fulbright to Vienna, Austria; the Harriet Hale Woolley Award at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris, France; the first American pensionnaire at the French Academy in Rome at the Villa Medici; and the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.

Every month, the long-running improv team Bleach takes the stage to create Your Show — a completely made-up play inspired by a single audience suggestion.
That’s right: one word from you, and the cast (Allison Martone, Eric Angell, Kim Faubel, Neil Corso, Tommy Todd, and pianist Faustino Solis) build an entire world from scratch. No two shows are ever the same. Sometimes there’s music, sometimes there’s heartbreak, and it’s always comedy.

November 21-22
Amahl and the Night Visitors is a one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti telling the story of a poor shepherd boy and his mother, whose humble lives are forever changed by a visit from the Three Kings on their way to Bethlehem. Commissioned as the first opera written for television in the United States.
Four Lost Santas, by composer Spicer Carr, is a comedic holiday opera. Premiering in December 2024 as a lighthearted companion to Amahl and the Night Visitors, this one-act tells the story of four Santas—members of a barbershop quartet on their way to SantaCon—who break down on the side of the road. They are rescued by Judy and her imaginative son Rudy, who are on their way to a small-town production of Amahl. As unexpected cast members quit at the last minute, the group bands together with Christmas tunes, camaraderie, and a sprinkle of holiday magic to save the day. Regional premiere.
