The Tony Awards might get all the spotlight, but if you're a high school musical theater kid, the big dream is the annual Jimmy Awards in New York City. It’s the most prestigious national competition for high school musical theater.

And this year, a Las Vegas student didn’t just make it to the stage — he won.

On June 23rd, Chris Hayes, took home Best Performance by an Actor — the first time anyone from Nevada has ever won the top prize.

But it wasn’t just a big night for students. Elena Ferrante-Martin, Director of Performing Arts at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, received the Inspiring Teacher Award.

Chris and Elena are with us today to talk about the competition, and what this kind of recognition means.

Guests: Chris Hayes, musical theater actor; Elena Ferrante-Martin, director of performing arts, Bishop Gorman High School
