The 2020 election is two years past. But now, moves by a group of Republican voters in December of that year are leading to serious legal questions.
After an election, electors from each state certify which presidential candidate won. In Nevada, it was Joe Biden. So six electors, with election officials and members of the state Supreme Court, met on Zoom and cast their electoral votes for Biden.
However, some conservative voters who were not electors, but called themselves that, gathered in Carson City and cast their votes for Donald Trump. Those votes should not have meant anything—but then the group sent those votes to Congress and the National Archives.
Those votes cast for former Republican President Donald Trump were entirely symbolic. Now these fake electors, and others like them around the country are the subject of a federal investigation linked to last year’s deadly January 6th Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
