Favy Fav - otherwise known as Las Vegas artist Justin Favela - and Babelito - otherwise known as academic Emmanuel Ortega - Las Vegas’ Latinos Who Lunch, join us again.
The two podcasters have had an interesting month. For one, they both attended RuPaul’s DraCon and hosted a panel discussion at the gathering.
“Well, DragCon is Disneyland for drag queen enthusiasts – basically,” Favela explained.
The topic of the panel was "The Art of Resistance." Ortega said they had artists, drag queens, YouTube stars and more to answer one question.
“What does it mean to create their art in the era of Trump?”
Both agreed they got very interesting answers to that question.
The trip to the drag queen convention was more than just the panel. It was a chance to explore the idea of drag as an art form in all of it's cross-cultural and gender-bending glory.
They also got to talk to other people at the convention about a character on RuPaul's show "Drag Race." Her name is Valentina and she caused a stir.
“It was nice to a Latina character on the show that was all about her culture and representing it. That was why we were sad to see her go,” Favela said.
They - and other critics of the show - said the judges often missed the point of her performances because they didn't understand the nuisances of Latin culture. Favela said "Latinos" are often lumped together into one category but there is a lot more going on and Valentina highlighted that.
The podcast has just celebrated its one-year anniversary, but it will be a few weeks before their fans will hear from them again. Favela is headed to Miami for an artist in residence program for six weeks.
