The chairman of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance will be working at both ends of the state this month to argue that a better-prepared workforce would be a catalyst for new business development.
John Delikanakis, elected late last year as chairman of the public-private development agency, will take a delegation to Carson City next week to meet state lawmakers and officials.
Among the messages he expects to convey is the LVGEA would oppose any efforts to dismantle the business tax increases it supported two years ago to boost education funding.
“I understand there are certain elements in the Legislature that are that are interested in trying to roll that back, and I can tell you that the LVGEA is not in favor of that,” Delikanakis said.
Later in the month the LVGEA will be a lead sponsor of the Be Engaged education summit to bring business leaders into the process of improving education in Clark County.
The LVGEA is expected to release a workforce report card at Be Engaged showing that, while workforce development lags, workers in Southern Nevada are innovative and motivated.
The report card “identified areas we need to target and expand in … to attract the industries that are interested in coming to Southern Nevada,” said Delikanakis, who is also a partner at the law firm Snell & Wilmer.
