In October, Nevada lawmakers rushed to approve $750 million in room taxes to help fund an NFL stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.
It had to get done, they said, or the city could lose a chance to get a pro football team here. There are so few teams, the argument went, and the Oakland Raiders is the one team that wants to come to Las Vegas
Not so fast.
Last week, a ballot question that would have helped the San Diego Chargers get a new stadium failed.
The Chargers might be moving, then, into a stadium in Los Angeles, when it’s built.
But couldn’t they also be a team salivating to move into the $1.9 billion stadium that could be built in Las Vegas?
Mitch Moss with ESPN Radio told KNPR's State of Nevada it is a "possibility."
However, things are a lot more complicated than that, he said. Both the Raiders and the Chargers have approval from the league to move to Los Angeles.
The Chargers have until January to decide whether they're going to move north, but the team could also decide to stay in San Diego and hope another stadium deal does get approved.
Whatever the team wants to do, the other NFL owners will ultimately decide whether any team is coming to Southern Nevada.
“They have to wait until the owners decide what they’re going to do with the Raiders," Moss said, "If the owners then say, ‘We’re not going to move the Raiders from Oakland.’ Then San Diego can look into moving to Las Vegas.”
