Black Mountain Institute Hosts Poet Sasha Steensen

It’s not a widely known program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. But the Creative Writing Program has produced a number of well-known and prolific writers, including poet Sasha Steensen.

Steensen, a graduate of the inaugural class of the UNLV Creative Writing Program in 2000, will be featured Thursday in the Alumni Writers Series at 7 p.m. at the Greenspun Hall Auditorium.

After earning her degree at UNLV, Steensen received a Ph.D in poetics from the State University of New York, Buffalo.

"I'm very proud to be part to that first class," Steensen told KNPR. "It was a very intimate experience then, and it still his today."

She is the author of three books of poetry, House of Deer, The Method, and A Magic Book, which on the Alberta DuPont Bonsal Prize.

Her essays and poems have appeared in Jubilat, The Laurel Review, Boston Review and Denver Quarterly. She also teaches creative writing at Colorado State University, where she serves as poetry editor for the Colorado Review.
