If you take a drive northeast out of Las Vegas to the Virgin River and down near the shore of Lake Mead you will eventually end up in Gold Butte, a wilderness of sandstone slots and red rock mountains.Conservationists have been working for years to get federal protection for this wild and beautiful area.
And now, their hard work may be paying off. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced a bill to designate Gold Butte as a National Conservation Area.
"One of the reasons I’ve been a big advocate for making this a national conservation area is the fact that the real wonders of Gold Butte are kind of hidden off the main road,” says Karl Gustaveson, former Mesquite City Councilman. “There are wonders there that I think are second to none, not just in Nevada, but in other states.”
