tUne-yArDs’ Merril Garbus made history as the very first guest in the brand new NV89 ‘Biggest Little Studio.’ She sat down with host Willobee just hours before her electric performance at Cargo Concert Hall in Reno to promote her fourth album, I can feel you creep into my private life.
Garbus shared the making of the album, the first after becoming a self-taught club DJ, working only with vinyl. I can feel you creep into my private life is also the first album since she married bandmate and longtime tUne-yArDs collaborator Nick Brenner. The two wed in a New Year’s Eve ceremony in 2015.
Garbus says the album really began to take shape after she studied racial privilege and the politics of being white in America. She undertook a six month long workshop on “whiteness” at East Bay Meditation Center in Oakland California, her hometown.
Garbus says of the single, Your Hands, “I felt like what about just looking at my personal, what I do in a day. Like, the plastic I use in a day. The gas I use in a day. The way that I interact with people in a day. So just really getting into the nitty-gritty of our own, what can we admit that we are contributing to all these things instead of blaming it on everybody else.”
