Vice President Kamala Harris’s first campaign stop in Las Vegas since becoming the Democratic nominee for president drew thousands of supporters on Saturday.
Harris stressed the importance of November’s election saying her opponent, former President Donald Trump, is a threat to democracy.
The campaign rally at UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center was the last stop on Vice President Harris’ and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz tour of battleground states.
Thousands waited in triple degree heat in a line that stretched for miles around the building. At least 12,000 made it in before thousands more were turned away by law enforcement after fears of people overheating in line.
During her speech, Harris emphasized the importance of this election compared to those from years before.
“So much is on the line in this election, and understand: This is not 2016; this is not 2020. This time around, the stakes are even higher.”
In particular, Harris drew sharp lines between her pro-abortion rights platform, and the anti-abortion rights one of her opponent, former president Donald Trump.
She also committed to ending federal taxes on tips, a pledge her opponent, former President Trump has also made.
