A Las Vegas man has been arrested for his alleged actions at the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021. Mario Gonzalez, 51, was arrested by the FBI in Las Vegas this week.
Federal officials said Gonzalez traveled from Southern Nevada to Washington, D.C., and was among a mob of rioters on Capitol grounds. He allegedly entered the Capitol through the northern scaffolding where police were trying to stop the rioters from gaining access to the Upper West Terrace.
Gonzalez filmed himself in an altercation with police, in a selfie-style video on his phone, officials said. He came out of the scaffolding with a fire extinguisher and sprayed it in the direction of police. Police fired a "chemical riot control agent," records show, and Gonzalez dropped the extinguisher.
Gonzalez appeared in court on Jan. 8, 2024 in the District of Nevada.
"His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election," wrote the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia in a news release.
To date, 1,265 people have been charged from all 50 states for their actions at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, including 440 charged with assault or impeding law enforcement, a felony.
