John L. Smith wonders if Virginia's election results will mean much in Nevada

Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin rallies the faithful in Fredericksburg over the weekend.

Nevada political mavens who gaze east to Virginia for clues about next year’s elections in the Silver State might be wasting their time.

State of Nevada contributor John L. Smith said results from Tuesday’s odd-year gubernatorial election in Virginia should make for good political “hot stove” talk going into the 2022 midterms.

“It's not really the full season yet, it's essentially the preseason,” Smith said. “So you have that going on in the press. And so I think that that really puts that that microscope on Virginia.”

Cable news breathlessly covered GOP nominee's Glenn Youngkin victory over former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, with some observers saying that bodes ill for President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats.

But Smith said the states might be too different to make any judgments about what the results mean in Nevada.

“The Republican Party in Nevada has “a clarion connection to Trumpism vs. Virginia, where Younkin is essentially saying, ‘You know, it's great to have the former president’s support, but gee whiz, I've got all this other stuff I'm running on.’”
