RENO, Nev. (AP) — Lawyers for a Salvadoran immigrant charged on accusations of killing four people in Nevada are asking a judge to postpone his murder trial indefinitely.
The defense for Wilber Ernesto Martinez Guzman is attempting to determine whether he has a mental disability that would make him ineligible for the death penalty.
The lawyers say they cannot conduct an investigation without sending medical experts to interview the 21-year-old's family and friends in Central America, which they can't do because of the pandemic.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that the state argues the experts could conduct their investigation using platforms such as Zoom or FaceTime. The state says Martinez Guzman has been using Zoom to talk to family.
