Family Of Man Killed By Sparks Police Takes Steps Toward Lawsuit Against City, Department

The family of an 18-year-old man who was shot and killed by two Sparks police officer is preparing to sue the city of Sparks and the police department.

Miciah Lee was shot and killed in January after his mother called 911 while he was threatening to kill himself.

Lee's family took the first step in the lawsuit by filing a civil complaint last Thursday.

They say the officers violated his rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, because they knew he was in the middle of a mental health crisis but failed to make accommodations.

In the complaint, they noted that police treated Lee as a criminal when he had done nothing wrong.

The City of Sparks and police department both have a policy of not commenting on pending litigation.
