Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., joined his fellow Democratic presidential candidates in Las Vegas over the weekend for a union form.

Many question whether the U.S. is ready to elect a gay President. But don’t tell that to the growing number of supporters for Pete Buttigieg.

Buttigieg has a record for defying odds. In a county almost evenly divided politically, he won 80 percent of the vote to become the mayor of South Bend, Ind., in 2015.

Though Buttigieg addresses his sexuality and the need for LGBT rights, and openly celebrates his husband, it’s not central to his campaign. “Mayor Pete” also stresses the need to change health care systems, racial justice and homelessness

With 18 other Democrats, he was in Las Vegas Saturday for a labor-focus candidate forum.
