Nevada Dept. Of Correction Reports Decline In Prison Population

Officials at the Nevada Department of Corrections say the prison population has declined by more than 300 inmates since mid-2017.

The Nevada Independent reports there were 13,768 in-house inmates in Nevada’s prisons at the end of June, and 13,427 at the end of November.

The DOC has tried to focus on rehabilitating inmates, and the Legislature approved a range of criminal justice reform bills in the most recent session.

Officials said despite the small decline, the prisons remain more than 1,000 inmates above emergency capacity level. This comes even after the state sent about 200 inmates to a private prison in Arizona last year.
