Private Prison Contract Raises Questions

Advocates for civil liberties and transparency are raising questions about Nevada’s plan to address prison overcrowding using private prisons.

The Nevada Independent reports state and federal records laws don’t apply to private government contractors.

This presents a problem when trying to obtain comprehensive information about inmates complaints, disciplinary actions, and deaths in a timely fashion.

The head of the state department of corrections says the private prisons are run at the same standard as those run by the state and the same information about inmates will be collected.

A Nevada prisons spokesperson says specific reporting processes haven’t yet been fully codified.
