Sandoval Vetoes Bill Banning Private Prisons

Governor Brian Sandoval has vetoed a bill that would have placed a ban on private prisons in Nevada.

Assembly Bill 303 was among more than two dozen measures that will not move forward from this legislative session. Sandoval said the bill goes too far by limiting the discretion of the Department of Corrections director to use private prisons when overcrowding or other issues make these facilities necessary.

He said Nevada may have a use for private prisons between now and 2022.
