Wrongful Death Lawsuit Settlement Awaiting Washoe Co. Commission Approval

A $75,000 settlement for a wrongful death lawsuit against the Washoe County Jail is awaiting a vote by the Washoe County Commission.

The family of Niko Smith, who died at the Washoe County jail in 2016, has agreed to the settlement, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The commission is expected to vote on the settlement Tuesday.

Smith is one of three men in the past two years to die because of being restrained by deputies.

In addition to those three deaths, the Reno Gazette-Journal discovered that, since the beginning of 2015, six suicides and two deaths ruled accidents have occurred at the jail.
