RENO, Nev. (AP) — A northern Nevada school district says it had more $279,000 in unused lunch fees during the school year and is looking to put part of the money to good use.
Reports say a portion of Washoe County School District's school lunch funds is from students who are no longer enrolled.
Former students with overpaid accounts are allowed to ask for a refund or transfer the funds to a sibling.
The district says it is talking with the Nevada Department of Agriculture to see if it can legally use part of the money to pay its $66,700 debt from unpaid lunch meals.
District Chief Operating Officer Pete Etchart says if approved, the district would still allow students to get refunds within three to five years of graduation before reinvesting the money.
