The U.S. Department of Agriculture is requiring the Washoe County School District raise its lunch prices by 10 cents for the next school year.
The Washoe County School District participates in the USDA’s National School Lunch Program, which helps the district provide free lunches to qualifying students.
The district is thus required by law to keep their fully-paid lunches as close to the national average as possible. The increase will bring the total price of a lunch to $2.70 in elementary schools and $2.95 in middle and high schools.
The price hike does not affect those students who qualify for free and reduced lunches. The Reno Gazette Journal reportsroughly 46 percent of Washoe students take part in the free and reduced lunch program.
