A bill to allow Utah homeowners to use their properties for hotel-style rentals made its way past a legislative committee this week.
The St. George Spectrum reportsthere was loud opposition from representatives of local governments including elected leaders from St. George and other parts of Washington County.
The House Business and Labor Committee voted 13-1 to pass House Bill 253, sending it on to receive a vote on the House floor.
If approved, HB 253 would allow homeowners to rent out parts of their home and block cities from using sharing websites like Airbnb to identify residents who might be renting rooms.
City officials from St. George and other local governments have lobbied against the legislation, arguing they should have discretion over what they consider to be a zoning issue.
