Utah's House of Representatives is now requiring security to search the bags of members of the public who wish to watch their proceedings from an overhead gallery following a disturbance last year.
Utah Highway Patrol Capt. Barton Blair told The Deseret News the new restrictions started this week at the request of House leaders.
Blair says the measures are a response to commotion last year during a debate about the death penalty, when the brother of a man who had been executed in Utah was arrested after shouting at lawmakers from the gallery and displaying graphic images of the man's autopsy.
Senate President Wayne Niederhauser said Tuesday there's no plan to make similar changes in the Senate.
Utah's Capitol does not have metal detectors and allows lawmakers and members of the public are allowed to carry guns.
