Nevada Taxicab Authority Keeps Current Rates, Fees In Place

The Nevada Taxicab Authority has opted not to change rates for Southern Nevada's taxis.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the group wants to wait until the legislative session begins next month before making any adjustments, saying it wasn't sure if lawmakers would want to change anything themselves.

The Authority was weighing changes like eliminating the credit card surcharge for taxi passengers, but instead decided to keep current fare structures in place.

That surcharge specifically was the target of criticism in an audit of the taxi industry carried out last year.

Analysts suggested the $3 charge for passengers just to use their credit cards caused anything between a $3 million and $47 million overcharge for customers.

The group regulates taxicab operations in Clark County specifically, where ridership has been on the decline since ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft entered the market.
