Nevada Democrats, who now have majorities in both houses of the state legislature, have set their sights on overturning the state's achievement school district program.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Senate's education committee has filed for a bill draft request to get rid of the program.
It's one that allows poorly performing public schools to be put under the control of charter school operators.
If Democrats successfully bring such a bill to the floor of the Legislature, a party line vote would approve it, but Gov. Brian Sandoval, a Republican who strongly supported the measure, would have to agree to sign it as well.
If he vetoed the legislation, Democrats would need Republican support to override that veto.
There are five Clark County schools in the running to be named to the achievement school district, with the state making a decision by the first of February.
