Authorities say a 56-year-old Nevada prison inmate serving a life-without-parole sentence for killing a man in Las Vegas and driving the man's truck to Elko has died in custody.
The Nevada Department of Corrections said Monday that Harold Furbay died Saturday of an undisclosed illness at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas.
The Clark County coroner was conducting an autopsy.
Furbay also used the name David Hammond.
He was held at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs after being sentenced in February 1998 for murder and robbery in the 1991 death of Walter Jerry Mitchell.
Jurors were told that Furbay had also been accused of stabbing a man to death and stealing his truck in Alabama, and that he served two years in prison for a 1983 incident that resulted in a man's death in Maryland.
