Utah Allowing Permits For Finding Christmas Trees On Federal Land

Utah families already thinking about getting a Christmas tree can now apply for a permit to search for the perfect one.

The U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management will have permits available in their field offices starting Monday through Christmas Eve.

BLM spokesman Christian Venhuizen tells The Spectrum newspaper in St. George the purchase of a permit also includes a map so people know where not to cut a tree.

Also, only certain trees including pinyon pine and juniper can be axed.

Venhuizen says fourth-grade students can obtain a free tree permit because of President Barack Obama's "Every Kid in a Park" program.

Dixie National Forest spokeswoman Marcia Gillies says proceeds from the permits go toward the forest service for education programs.
