Utah Sees Decline In Early Voting

Lt. Governor Spencer Cox says about 22 percent of Utah's active registered voters have cast their ballots already, a number that's slightly lower than his office expected to see a week away from Election Day.

Cox said at a news conference Tuesday that it's hard to compare early turnout to past years because the options and voting windows have changed from past election years.

Cox says voter registrations have surged in the state, with 50,000 new registrations submitted over the past week. But he says voters apparently are hanging onto their ballots, perhaps because they're still trying to decide who to vote for in the presidential race.

He says about 30 percent of Utah's registered Democrats have already voted, but only about 20 percent of Republicans and 20 percent of unaffiliated voters have cast ballots.
