State Senate District 5 - Joyce Woodhouse - Democratic

Name: Joyce Woodhouse

Office: State Senate, District 5

On-Air Interview Summary:

State Senator Joyce Woodhouse is running to retain her seat in District 5.

As a long time educator, Woodhouse would like to continue her focus on improving the state’s education system, if she is re-elected.

Woodhouse said many changes that were put into place during the 2015 legislative session were things she and other lawmakers had worked on for years, including expanding full-day Kindergarten.

If she goes back to Carson City has a legislator in 2017, Woodhouse would like to continue her work on changing the funding formula for student. The formula is how much a district gets based on the needs of the students, and she told KNPR’s State of Nevada that I hasn’t been changed since 1967.

In 2015, more weight was added for special education students, which means schools with more special education students received extra funding to provide more services for those students. Woodhouse would like to see the same thing happen for English language learners and students living in poverty.
