Utah AG Happy Transgender Bathroom Directive Blocked

Utah's attorney general is applauding a ruling from a Texas judge that temporarily blocks an Obama administration directive on bathroom rights for transgender students in U.S. public schools.

Attorney General Sean Reyes said in a statement Monday that local school officials and parents have worked to accommodate transgender students without federal mandates that cause confusion and less cooperation.

Utah is one of 12 states that joined Texas in challenging the directive in court. The directive tells public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.

A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction Sunday.

Reyes says the injunction doesn't stop schools from following the directive if they want but stops federal officials from enforcing it until the court case is settled.
