LAS VEGAS (AP) — Law enforcement officials at Lake Mead are gearing up to keep visitors safe during what will be a busy holiday week.
National Park Service Rangers tell KLAS-TV in Las Vegas that despite the lake being at a historically low level, they are expecting large crowds come Memorial Day weekend.
They say among the concerns is high wind speeds.
NPS Ranger Charles Otto says heightened winds can cause boats to suddenly drift.
He advises every boater to wear a life jacket as well as children under 12.
He also urged people to be patient while launching their boats into the water.
Two people have drowned at Lake Mead this year.
Las Vegas' 2 million residents and 40 million tourists a year get almost all their drinking water from Lake Mead.
