Nevada Prison Guards Blamed In Inmate Wrongful Death Case

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Documents made public in a federal wrongful death lawsuit blame Nevada prison guards for the shotgun killing of one inmate and the wounding of another during a brawl in a High Desert State Prison hallway in November 2014.

None of the three officers is still on the job, according to disciplinary records unsealed by a U.S. district judge in Las Vegas.

Corrections officers Jeff Castro and Isiah Smith resigned after scathing disciplinary reports.

Guard trainee Raynaldo-John Ramos was dismissed before being hired permanently.

Prison and state officials didn't immediately comment Monday about the documents released Friday in the lawsuit filed by the family of Carlos Perez Jr.

Perez family lawyer Cal Potter says guards created a "gladiator-like scenario" to let two handcuffed inmates fight before the guard trainee shot them.
