💼A correctional lieutenant at Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center in Las Vegas has filed a lawsuit against the Nevada Department of Corrections concerning her time at Southern Desert Correctional Center. Karissa Currier and her attorney allege she was fired from her position at the men's prison due to gender discrimination and her raising concerns about facility conditions. In the lawsuit, Currier alleges, among other complaints, that cell doors didn't lock and inmates could simply kick them open. Concern over facility conditions across Nevada’s prisons is not new. Since July, five inmates have died at High Desert State Prison, including another death at Southern Desert Prison.
🏒 The Vegas Golden Knights did not muster much offense during their two weekend losses in Florida: 3-0 on Saturday to the Panthers and 2-1 on Sunday to the Lightning. That loss came in overtime, so they did collect a point. It was the NHL debut of goaltender Carl Lindbom. The 22-year-old had an impressive 0.929 save percentage on 28 shots. The East Coast road trip wraps up Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes, who lost to the Knights 4-1 last Monday after winning the previous four meetings. The Knights host Colorado on Friday in the traditional Nevada Day game.
🚌 Lane closures on Las Vegas Boulevard between Robindale and Warm Springs Road are in effect and are planned to last about three weeks as Brightline West begins work on infrastructure needed for its Las Vegas train station. All northbound lanes will remain open, but southbound lanes will be reduced to two for installation of a storm drain connection under Las Vegas Boulevard and realignment of an existing sewer line near the station site. Last week the center median between Robindale Road and Eldorado Lane was removed to accommodate lane shifts. Brightline plans to construct a high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California, with stations in other Southern California cities. Riders will be able to transfer to Metrolink commuter rail to travel on to downtown Los Angeles. Hear NPR's Joel Rose talk about how this High-speed train between the sister cities is trying to help stave off rising costs.
🐻 Late-spring frosts aren’t just tough on gardens — they’re creating new challenges for black bears in the Mountain West. A new study from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), finds that these frosts can wipe out key food sources like berries, acorns, and pine nuts. With their natural buffet gone, bears are wandering into mountain towns and neighborhoods in search of a meal. Researchers analyzed data from more than 500 black bears captured between 1998 and 2022 in the Sierra Nevada. They found a clear pattern: years with late frosts led to spikes in human-bear conflicts. In one season alone, bear complaints in the study area reached about 1,500 — roughly three times higher than an average year. Hear the full story.
🍅Recalling my father's role in a tribal crop experiment, I still remember the tomatoes. Big, round, and red, vine attached; the kind of tomatoes you see in a stock photo or magazine ad. Jackpot Brand Tomatoes sprouted to life almost 45 years ago on the Moapa River Indian Reservation in Moapa Valley. My father, Harold Goldsmith, managed the greenhouse operation, funded through a federal public service employment program, and beamed as he showed off the product he named at a market on Nellis Air Force Base.
