SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — New policies for vacation-rental permits are creating headaches for some South Lake Tahoe homeowners.
The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports that some homeowners say they will have to spend thousands of dollars to make sure their properties are compliant to get their permits renewed.
South Lake Tahoe passed new policies this year surrounding permits for vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods.
They include enforcement of building-code requirements, new permit fees and fines.
City building official Dave Walker says his inspectors are trying to be as lenient as possible but not at the expense of safety.
A coalition of homeowners is currently suing the city over the new fees, calling it an illegal tax.
City officials say there are more than 1,700 permitted vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe.
