LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Las Vegas City Council is taming the crowd of downtown street performers.
Elected council members on Wednesday voted for an ordinance setting standards for Fremont Street entertainers out at the casino-lined pedestrian mall.
Performers starting Nov. 1 must register for free with the city to entertain for tips at one of the 38 newly established zones, which are six-feet in diameter.
Officials say it combats infighting and competition for prime spots, as the performers will change their randomly assigned spots every two hours.
The new rules don't address the concern over revealing outfits and aggressive or rowdy behavior that officials say deter families from the mall. There was criticism that doing so could violate First Amendment rights.
The ordinance doesn't affect street performers on the Las Vegas Strip.
