CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The director of the Nevada Department of Corrections has resigned effectively immediately.
Gov. Brian Sandoval announced Monday that he was accepting the resignation of Greg Cox, who has led the agency since early 2011. No reason was given.
Sandoval thanked Cox for his service and said longtime Department of Corrections employee E.K. McDaniel will lead the agency in the interim until a new leader is found.
The corrections department faces multiple lawsuits over shootings inside its prisons. One lawsuit alleges guards at High Desert State Prison let two handcuffed inmates fight before a guard-in-training fired a shotgun, killing one inmate and wounding the other.
Inmate Carlos Manuel Perez Jr. died Nov. 12, but it wasn't widely known until months later that he died of gunshot wounds.
